Fabulous Chair

This fabulous chair has pride of place in the Great Hall at Athelhampton. We informally refer to it as the ‘Revolution Chair’, as it is dominated with the carved date 1688, the year of the ‘Glorious Revolution’, when James II was deposed by his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange. William and his troops landed in Torbay in November 1688, passing through Dorset, reaching London before the end of the year.
