Fabulous Chair

This fabulous chair has pride of place in the Great Hall at Athelhampton. We informally refer to it as the ‘Revolution Chair’, as it is dominated with the carved date 1688, the year of the ‘Glorious Revolution’, when James II was deposed by his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange. William and his troops landed in Torbay in November 1688, passing through Dorset, reaching London before the end of the year.

Retro Bowl 26
Dec 25, 2025

Furniture like this gives so much character to historic houses, showing how objects can be more than decoration — they’re witnesses to the Retro Bowl 26 story of the people and events of their time. Makes me even more curious to explore the rest of the Great Hall and see what other treasures Athelhampton has preserved!
