Spring Bulbs at Athelhampton Gardens in Dorset

Updated: 16 hours ago

Spring at Athelhampton House & Gardens in Dorset is a moment of quiet transformation, as thousands of bulbs emerge to bring colour and structure to the historic gardens.

Led by Head Gardener Sophy Robertson, each garden space is planted with its own distinct character, carefully designed to complement the surrounding architecture and herbaceous planting.

In the Corona Garden, deep velvety tones dominate, with varieties such as Queen of the Night and Merlot creating rich shades of near black. The Green Court offers a striking contrast, alive with the fiery reds, oranges and yellows of Yokohama, Novi Sun and Negrita.

Along the South Walk, softer planting takes hold. Fusarino, Haiti and Candy Prince bring pinks and pale blues, following a scheme inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, reinterpreted for Athelhampton’s setting.

In the Fern Walk, the creamy blooms of Exotic Emperor sit gently amongst unfolding ferns, while in the Kitchen Garden, Cherry Red and Apeldoorn tulips provide a vivid splash of colour running through productive beds.

Across the estate, Sophy and her team tend five acres of formal gardens alongside the one acre Kitchen Garden, and there is always work underway. At a time when many gardens are reducing labour intensive borders, Athelhampton is quietly doing the opposite. The borders continue to extend, with a further 150 feet planned this season, bringing even more depth, colour and interest for visitors to enjoy.

For those looking for things to do in Dorset this spring, Athelhampton offers a garden in full colour, evolving week by week.
