Grey Skies at Athelhampton House & Gardens

Grey skies settled over Athelhampton House & Gardens this evening, bringing the promise of much needed rain that had been forecast all day.


Athelhampton House, a large, stone built Tudor manor house viewed from the front. One wing extends towards the viewer on the left hand side. Above the porch in the centre are crenelations, and very worn away apes sit on top of the finials. Behind the house are dramatic, dark grey clouds.

After weeks of hot, dry weather, our lawns have taken on their summer golden tones, and the gardens are quietly hoping for a gentle soaking.

Just a few miles away, the rain fell, but here the clouds drifted on without a single drop.

This is surrounded by a gravel path which in turn is surrounded by a densely planted bed, surrounded by a circular wall with an arch at the centre. The wall has lots of sharp points coming up from it. Behind the wall is a hedge, and towering over everything is a Eucalyptus tree. Behind this are dramatic grey clouds, heavy with rain.

We’ll keep hoping that the next shower finds its way to Athelhampton.
