Fog in Athelhampton's Historic Gardens

A freezing and foggy welcome for our visitors at Athelhampton today!

The West Lawn at Athelhampton, looking towards the house. In the foreground, purple, white, and yellow crocuses are in focus, growing out of the dewy grass. In the background, the shape of the house looms, bathed in fog.

We took a quick wander through the gardens, and along the River Piddle this morning. The sun shining through a heavy haze of fog made everything feel eerie and slightly magical. Walking around Athelhampton often feels like stepping back in time, but with the fog muffling sight and sound, this feeling of time-travel was subtly enhanced.

A view through a wrought iron gateway into Athelhampton's Great Court, where the yew pyramids are half visible in the fog. A pond with a fountain is visible at the centre, and the stone steps up to the terrace are almost visible in the background.

Fortunately the fog soon disappeared and Athelhampton's historic gardens were bathed in sunlight!

A photo taken while standing on the middle of a bridge across the River Piddle. The whole scene is bathed in fog, with the silhouettes of leafless trees visible along the river banks. On the right hand side, a wooden bench is situated looking across the river, and beyond it is a clipped hedge.

Our house, gardens and restaurants are open all year around. Members of Historic Houses can visit for free when showing a valid member card.
