Dorchester Hotel Plans Cancelled – What It Means for Visitors and Staycations in Dorset

Updated: May 19

News that plans for a new hotel in Dorchester town centre have been cancelled has generated considerable local interest, particularly at a time when the area is seeing strong visitor demand.

The proposed development, which would have brought over 100 additional bedrooms and created around 30 jobs, had received planning approval last year. However, rising construction costs and wider economic pressures have led Whitbread to withdraw from the project.

While disappointing for the town, the story also reflects a broader trend. Dorset continues to grow in popularity, not only with visitors from further afield, but increasingly with those closer to home.

At Athelhampton House & Gardens, we see this clearly. Alongside our many visitors from across the UK and overseas, there has been a noticeable rise in local and regional visitors choosing to spend time closer to home. With the cost of fuel and overseas travel remaining high, the appeal of a Dorset staycation has never been stronger.

Dorchester plays an important role as a gateway to the county, but some of the most memorable experiences lie just beyond the town itself.

A short drive from the centre, Athelhampton offers over twenty rooms to explore within one of England’s finest Tudor manor houses, set within five acres of formal, award-winning gardens. The Great Court, with its sculpted yew pyramids and fountains, provides a striking setting in the warmer months, while the house itself offers a rich journey through centuries of English history.

For those planning a visit, the change in hotel plans may simply encourage a wider view of the area. Many visitors already stay across the surrounding villages or along the Jurassic Coast, combining a trip to Dorchester with time spent exploring Dorset’s countryside and historic houses.

Athelhampton is particularly well suited to this kind of visit. With ample parking, a relaxed setting, and the option to enjoy lunch, afternoon tea, or Sunday carvery in the Coach House restaurant, it offers an easy and rewarding day out, whether you are staying locally or visiting for the day.

What remains unchanged is the strength of Dorset as a destination. Popular with both locals and visitors alike, it continues to offer a compelling alternative to travelling further afield.

Athelhampton House & Gardens is open seven days a week, throughout the year, offering a warm welcome whenever you choose to visit.
