A New Artist in the Art Gallery at Athelhampton House: Silvia Pineda

The newly refurbished art gallery at Athelhampton is a space designed for local artists to exhibit their work, and these temporary exhibitions change regularly. Our new artist, who was installed yesterday, is Silvia Pineda.

A sculpture of a blue whale, painted blue and decorated with waves filled with triangles along the belly, and yellow spots over the top of the body. It sits in front of the newly installed laser etched window in the art gallery at Athelhampton, with the laser etching looking like smoke behind it.

The Mexican born daughter of a jeweller and a sculptor, artistry runs in Silvia's blood. She's exhibited her paintings in our art gallery before, with her vibrant blend of colour and movement offering a lively contemporary contrast within Athelhampton's historic Tudor house and gardens. Her jewellery and ceramics are now a staple in Athelhampton's shop. Her love of colour is clearly reflected in her work, and she is perpetually exploring and innovating.

A trained mathematician and former lecturer, her expressive abstract paintings showcase the qualities of liquid paint, and she loves to show this fluidity and movement in her art. Her abstract paintings have a playful nature, and with close enough examination, birds, animals, and even humans begin to appear in the patterns created.

"As an artist, I aim to create Art that conveys a message of celebration of life and nature, of vitality, of spontaneity, a positive view of life and the constant movement and change associated with it.
A humanoid sculpture reclining on its side and leaning one one arm, its head propped up by its hand. It's blue, decorated with white triangles on the torso, and blue/green triangles and orange spots on its limbs. Little of the face is visible from this angle, but it has a long, beaklike nose, and cat-like ears. It sits in front of one of the paintings hanging in the art gallery at Athelhampton, but little of it is visible beyond blue and yellow paint on a white background.
I hope you like my art and enjoy my pieces as much as I enjoy creating them."

The one towards the back has a small painting that's too far away to be properly visible. The middle one has an abstract painting in yellows and pinks and browns. The painting in the foreground has a gold frame, and shows a mermaid sitting on a rock on the shoreline on the right hand side of the foreground. On the left, a large sailing ship painted green and gold with grey sails is foundering on the rocks

Silvia's art is available to purchase from Athelhampton - both the pieces in the art gallery, but also the jewellery and ceramics in Athelhampton's shop. She is exhibiting at Athelhampton until the end of June.

Athelhampton House & Gardens are open 7 days a week, all year round, save a few days at Christmas.
