A Frosty Day at Historic Gardens Near Dorchester

A cold night and frosty morning at Athelhampton, but even with a chill in the air the house and gardens are looking stunning.

A view of the front of Athelhampton, with the West Wing stretching out towards the viewer. The top of the porch in the centre of the front is crenelated. It sits behind frosty lawns, with a wide gravel path leading towards the front door. Above, the sky is bright blue but slightly cloudy.

Our modern air-source heating and the fire in the Tudor Great Hall are keeping the rooms of the house toasty and warm for our visitors today.

A frosty brick path leads away from the viewer towards a pond with a sundial sculpture at the centre of it. Around the pond is a topiary hedge. On either side of the path are borders with quite dense amounts of plants for the time of year. In the background is the wall of the garden, and then larger trees beyond.

Athelhampton is a member of the Historic Houses and an RHS Partner Garden. Our historic gardens near Dorchester are open to visitors all year round. You can also enjoy our house and restaurants whenever you like, too - we're only closed for a few days over Christmas!

At the centre of the picture is a small pond and a fountain. On the right hand corner of the pond is a statue of a heron. Framing the pond in the background are two large yew pyramids. The sides of two more yew pyramids stand in the foreground, framing the right and left sides of the picture. In the background on the left hand side is a cedar of Lebanon towering above much of the gardens, and on the right hand side is a eucalyptus tree doing the same. The sky is blue, but with a few orange clouds in it.
